According to recent characteristics retained by UNWTO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Tourisme Québec describes ecotourism as "a form of tourism which aims to discover a natural environment while preserving its integrity, which includes an interpretation of natural and cultural components of the business environment (educational component), which promotes an attitude of respect towards the environment, based on the concepts of sustainable development and resulting socio-economic benefits for local and regional communities. "
